Ramstein Germany Time - It was me when the next PCS called Ramstein Air Base, Germany. I also yelled at my husband - twice. Our family has been lucky enough to be located all over the world. What I wanted to be located in the middle of Europe and it finally happened! We have the largest US airbase in Germany. Ramstein AFB!
Many people in the Air Force community associate working in Germany with Ramstein Air Force Base. It is home to the 86th Airlift, AMC 721, USAFE-AFAFRICOM and NATO. Work rates may vary by order. There are many exercises with partners. With that said, travel is highly encouraged. There is a large American military community in this region. The population consists of active duty, retired, DoD citizens, DoDEA employees and their family members.

In this area, which is actually the Kaiserslautern Air Force Base, most of the locals speak English. Don't be fooled, I always ask 'Speech si English?' I ask Most of the time, I get "no" in response and continue to speak English. I personally struggle with German - I even read it, but I try to use some German.

If you want to learn the language, there are several intensive courses in German. Check the Community Center's Facebook page for information and a schedule. You can also get a free Mango language account with your USAFE library account or sign up for a free Duolingo account. Both of these language learning websites have apps for your phone.
While this is always true, it is important in the current Covid situation. You will need to go into quarantine immediately upon arrival, so you should book before you arrive.
Make a reservation when you accept your arrival date. No need to wait to order. Transient passengers must also make reservations in advance at the Ramstein Air Base Hotel. (Retrieved from the official Facebook page of Ramstein Air Base on August 6, 2020)
Driving here in Germany is a bit different, but nothing to worry about, but to get a driver's license here, you have to pass a test. Fortunately, you can even take the test online before you arrive.

A member of the Service may register to access you. Before you can get your USAEUR driver's license and international driver's license, you must complete the course, pass the 200-question preliminary test, and pass the final 100-question test. Ramstein TLF Internet is not reliable. I didn't take a course before I came and worked one day in the E-Club basement and one day in the USO terminal.
Most Americans send at least one car to Germany when they PCS to Ramstein. However, if you have an American brand, it can be difficult to find places to do serious business with them. As with most things when moving to Germany, moving a car is not that stressful. You can start your research here
I know it's hard, but don't bother house hunting, just set your heart on a particular house. The rental market here changes quickly, sometimes within hours! Also, you must attend the Ramstein housing office briefing. What you can do is explore the villages around the base and determine which amenities are important; eg school districts, parks/walking trails, distance to grocery/bakery/butchers, time to base, etc.
If you have a computer with pets, follow the instructions to a "T". Otherwise, your dog may not be able to travel with you. For example, some breeds are even prohibited from being sent to Germany. Other obstacles are finding flights with pets or flying when pets are allowed (ie: if it's too hot, airlines won't allow pets to fly). You also need a specific microchip (not just one) and it needs to be implanted before you get rabies. There are many rules about bringing your pets and if you break any of them, your family members will be banned from your visit. Learn more about PCSing with your dog
Ramstein Bx/px Germany
Our family shipped our dog from Korea to the United States and then from the United States to Germany. Both times we were able to travel in the rotator and the flight was non-stop for him. I encourage you to print it out on letter size paper, place it in a binder, and tape it to a plate. We've included his name, some fun facts about him, and some cute family photos.
These groups are full of information! Chances are a similar question has been asked in the past, so the search function is useful to see other people's experiences.
Basic seating is limited. There is a mix of townhouses and terraced houses. You can be stationed at Ramstein, Landstuhl, or Vogelwech, regardless of which German air force base near Ramstein you are assigned to.
Most of the population lives in the surrounding villages. Some of the most popular are close to the base:

If you have school-aged children, please contact the School Liaison Officer (SLO) for the most up-to-date information. Each village is assigned a school district, so you'll need to wait until you arrive to find a home.
If you are a spouse and looking for a job, unfortunately it is competitive and hard to find.
USAJOBS is your place for job applications. Listings are available for GS, NAF, DoDEA, and DECA jobs. AAFES has a job listing on its website.
Tip: Contact the AFRC (Airman and Family Readiness Center) for assistance. I used their services to create a US JOBS profile. They can help with specific questions on the US JOBS website and best practices.
The Best Day Trips From Ramstein, Germany
One of the best things you can do here is the Globe Tour. Think of it as a grocery store - Target or Wal-Mart. Located in Kaiserslautern. They accept VAT forms every month.
Globe conducts a 3-hour tour of its stores and the economy as a whole. This is a great help if you are concerned about shopping in the economy and ease your worries. After traveling, I do most of my weekly shopping at the thrift store. You can't beat the price and I love the freshness of the produce section. I also buy all my meat from them. I love to try local products and often send them back to the States in gift boxes. Join the Globe Friends KL page to ask questions about local products or learn about booking tours.
Note: Another great way to soak up German culture and get to know your area is to enjoy all the amazing local cuisine. Here are my "must try" foods in Germany (besides schnitzel and kraut!)
Buying local in economy saves you money (usually) and gives you a more German experience, the largest BX in Europe is here (KMCC - Kaiserslautern Military Community Center). Shops boast home flavors alongside local favourites.

Let's not forget that this is a big step. You are moving halfway around the world to another country. It can be overwhelming, so give yourself some grace to settle in. That's 5 countries our family lived in and it took me 6 months to find my life.
Find a group of friends with whom you have something in common. Even as an introvert, I have friends I can lean on.
Waiting for work / local. Visit local coffee shops, take a weekly walk or bike trail, and take up a hobby. I started traveling at least one day a week.
Finally, don't expect life here to be like life in the US, because it won't. It will be different, but learn to find substitutes and appreciate the differences. This is an opportunity of a lifetime. Promise yourself you'll give it a chance, and if you do, you'll be rewarded with amazing opportunities and experiences.

Some people here suffer from the autumn/winter blues. The sun doesn't come out often and it gets dark in winter. So make the most of the bright, sunny days when they are available! Also, make some plans with rain in mind, or you'll never get out! We never go without an umbrella and accept rain as part of the weather in Germany for many months. Once you accept it, it becomes easier to accept and go with the flow.
