Ramstein Germany Map - The airport was built in the early 1950s as Landstuhl Airbase It was built as part of the Reichsautobahn, which was used as a German Luftwaffe landing site during World War II. A headquarters area named Ramstein was built on the north side of the airbase In 1957, both parts were merged into Ramstein Landstuhl Air Base, which later became known simply as Ramstein Air Base.
Since the early 1990s and with one exception, the sector has been a fighter unit with various names: 86 Fighter-Bomber Wing (FBW), 86 Fighter Interceptor Wing (FIW), 86 Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW). Ramstein was also temporarily the base for 26 Tactical Reconnaissance Wing (26 TRW).

In connection with the reorganization in the early 1990s, the 86 TFW was converted into a transport wing, the 86 Airlight Wing. This wing is still in Ramstein

Over the years, the air base has been in the news several times, for example in connection with an explosion in 1981 and a serious disaster during an air show in 1988.
A map from 1953 shows Landstuhl Air Base about a year after its opening - The old course of the motorway is very recognizable as part of the airport
On this US map from 1954, the location of the former freeway as part of the new airbase becomes even clearer. - Also recognized: Taxiway, dispersal area and Ramstein headquarters to the north. Later the section above the red-marked bypass also became part of the base (AMS M841 GSGS 4414, Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University/BYU/).
